![]() ![]() The Sky Jump is like a bungie jump that lets you jump from 855 ft up, and ends at the ground. When I first went on to the Stratosphere a couple of years ago, the Sky Jump was not built yet, so I was very excited and a little nervous. The X-Scream, Insanity, Big Shot, and Sky Jump. It is 1,149 ft high and has 4 rides on the top. The Stratosphere is a hotel, observation tower, and casino, and is the tallest building in Las Vegas and the 5th tallest building in the US. The baseball was great and challenging, but the real excitement came from The Stratosphere. However, if we did have the time, I would use my projectile motion and range equations, along with initial and final velocities, and time and distance to figure out exactly where the ball would land.Įarly this summer, I went to Las Vegas for a baseball trip. During a game, we do not have the time to bust out our calculator and use our equations to calculate where the ball must land, we have to just use our eyes and body to judge the projection and flight of the ball. The receiver must adjust his route so that he will be in the spot where the ball will land. As a quaterback, one must judge where the receiver will be and throw the ball in that area. In football, a pass is only completed if you successfully throw the ball to a teammate and he catches the ball. A football thrown in the air by the quaterback to a receiver is considered a projectile. ![]() Gravity, -9.8 m/s^2 is usually the only vertical acceleration and the object usually does not have horizontal acceleration. The motion of a projectile takes the shape of a parabola or a u-shaped graph. That way when you strike the match you are creating friction with the potassium on the strip which reacts with the heat and potassium chlorate setting your match on fire.Ī projectile is defined as an object that is acted upon by an outside force, has no self propulsion and not affected by air resistence. The box that comes with the safety matches has a special strip that has potassium on it. Safety matches, however, usually have potassium chlorate on the match, which helps the fire spread to the wood. Today we have strike anywhere that have phosphorus directly on the match tip. It is designed to catch fire when reacting with the heat caused by the friction. Phosphorus is a highly combustible material. If you rub a match against a smooth surface it is very hard to make fire. It is rough because it is designed to create a lot of friction. This rough and corrosive side is used for striking the match. Matches usually come in boxes with a rough side. ![]() When you create a lot of friction, heat is generated. Friction is the force that resists relative motion between two bodies in contact. When I went to science classes at Iolani, I learned about friction and how heat is created from friction. As I got older I realized that the fire had something to do with rubbing the match fast against an object. I was always amazed by how fire was created out of basically a piece of wood. When we have to light birthday cakes, I am always the person to light the candles. ![]()
